THH2017 Feature: Wei Jingyang From Swan to Peacock

National Headquarters  |  July 14, 2017

Although Wei Jingyang lost her hearing when she was just a toddler, she always carried within her a fascination for dance that was steadfast and unquenchable. At first, she was unsure of how a non-hearing person might pursue such a goal, but at age 10, she witnessed a performance that changed her worldview dramatically, setting her on a path of inspiration and newfound confidence.

The performance was none other than the “Thousand-Hands Guanyin by the China Disabled People’s Performing Arts Troupe (CDPPAT). The fact that they had danced at such a momentous event like the CCTV New Year’s Gala had left her in awe. These individuals were proof that people who have a hearing, visual, or physical impairment, could still achieve their dreams.

Wei Jingyang joined the CDPPAT in 2007, traveled the world, and even participated in the Beijing Paralympic Games. With her team, she no longer felt alone in her situation, and extended her hands in aid to guide her visually or physically impaired teammates whenever possible. Together, they were a family forged by compassion, fortitude , respect, and love for all. She stunned audiences as she performed her ballet piece in “Swans” at our 2010 “Thousands of Helping Hands” charity concert, and moved their spirits when she returned in 2016 as the lead dancer for the magnificent piece “The Soul of a Peacock” on the Lincoln Center stage in New York City!
