Tzu Chi USA History
Our history in the U.S. began in 1989 in Alhambra, California, following a visit from wealthy American businessman Stephen Huang who visited Dharma Master Cheng Yen in Taiwan where he sought personal guidance. The life-changing meeting inspired Huang to become a disciple. He was inspired to bring the mission of Tzu Chi to the U.S., making it the first-ever overseas chapter.
