On March 5, 2023, representatives from the Tzu Chi Foundation, the Central and South American Care Group, former Tzu Chi USA executives, and local volunteers gathered at the Tzu Chi Tijuana medical campus to witness a historic moment: the groundbreaking ceremony of the new ophthalmology clinic.
On February 2, 2023, Tzu Chi Northeast volunteers were invited to craft an all-vegetarian feast at the Lunar New Year Gala at New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ home, Gracie Mansion. This groundbreaking collaboration marked Tzu Chi USA’s first-ever visit to the prestigious residence.
On February 24, 2022, the Russian army invaded Ukraine. This largest war since the start of the 21st century directly displaced more than eight million Ukrainian families and affected countries and regions worldwide in terms of economy, food and agriculture, energy, and regional security. Representatives of two international organizations that signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Tzu Chi last year for a joint humanitarian aid effort for Ukrainians, IsraAid, and ADRA International (The Adventist Development and Relief Agency International), met Debra Boudreaux, CEO of Tzu Chi USA, for the first time on February 24, 2023. The date marked the first anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war. They exchanged their mutual international emergency aid experience and discussed current disaster relief following the recent earthquake in Turkey.
On February 17, 2023, Tzu Chi volunteers hosted a distribution at El Menahil International School in Istanbul, Turkey. The 152 care recipients included people who’d been displaced as result of recent deadly earthquakes in Turkey. Simultaneously, a team of Tzu Chi Relief volunteers visited the city of Nurdağı, in the Gaziantep Province to assess on-the-ground conditions.
After deadly earthquakes in southern Turkey, Tzu Chi Turkey’s Earthquake Relief Team has received permission from the Turkish government to visit the hardest-hit areas for disaster assessment on February 15, 2023.
In response to the 7.8 magnitude Kahramanmaraş earthquake in southern Turkey, Tzu Chi Relief volunteers are readying disaster relief operations.
At the beginning of 2023, Care Mission USA donated their central kitchen and service center to Tzu Chi Tijuana and the Buddhist Tzu Chi Charity Foundation so that Tzu Chi can expand care for more impoverished and underresourced Tijuana residents.
Tzu Chi distributed winter supplies and promoted healthy and environmental-friendly living to bring love and hope to the Bayview Hunter’s Point community in San Francisco.
