An optometry free clinic service was provided by Tzu Chi volunteers to impoverished school children and elderly residents from a secluded region of Tijuana, Mexico in order to bestow them with clear vision.
Tzu Chi USA Northeast Region launched a free vision clinic program at the Steward Hotel in Manhattan at the end of June 2023, providing eye care services to refugees from all over the world so they can settle down in the U.S. with peace of mind.
On May 21, 2023, the Tzu Chi Vision Mobile Clinic, the 11th of its kind in the United States, arrived in Las Vegas, further expanding the scope of mobile outreach services. In celebration, the Tzu Chi USA Las Vegas Service Center took this opportunity to hold a joint grand opening and Buddha Day Ceremony.
On February 26, 2023, Tzu Chi New York hosted a vision mobile service at the NYPD Community Center at 127 Penn in Brooklyn, New York. Fifteen patients in total, regardless of insurance status, received prescription glasses in same-day service — 100% free. The opportunity was made possible thanks to a link with the NYPD Community Affairs Bureau.
To better implement Tzu Chi New York’s Vision Mobile Clinic services within communities, Tzu Chi USA’s Northeast Region held an interactive gathering with New York City Council Members and school district representatives on June 6, 2022. Tzu Chi is committed to serving communities and ensuring essential medical services can reach wherever they are needed with love and care. By connecting with City Council Members and school district representatives, joint efforts are hoped to help these services reach more children across New York.
As the number of COVID-19 infections slowed in the U.S., Tzu Chi volunteers resumed the Mobile Vision Clinic in school districts in El Monte, CA, where they prescribed new eyeglasses for students from disadvantaged families. The kids couldn’t wait to put on their new glasses, and laughed heartily behind their masks, now that they could see the world clearly again.
As digital learning became the norm during the pandemic, children were straining their eyes more and lacking free services from their schools. Even before the onset of COVID-19, many students didn’t receive the proper vision care needed to succeed. Tzu Chi’s Mobile Vision Clinic brings optometrists on-site to schools, delivering top of the line services to students who need it most. In October of 2021, students at Walter Francis Bishop Elementary were able to get their eyesight checked and many of them were excited at the prospect of receiving free glasses.
On September 15, 2021, as part of Tzu Chi Medical Foundation’s outreach in Southern California, the Tzu Chi Vision Mobile Clinic traveled to a Pacific Clinics location in Santa Fe Springs, Los Angeles County, to offer vision tests and prescription glasses for those in need of them.
