Those impacted by the Sept. 19, 2017, earthquake in Mexico need financial aid to rebuild and Tzu Chi will provide disaster relief of benefit to over 10,000 households.
Mexico City, Dec. 6, 2017 – The massive 7.1 –magnitude earthquake that struck Central Mexico on September 19, 2017, caused extensive damage in the states of Puebla and Morelos, and in the Greater Mexico City area. Beyond the tragic loss of lives, many buildings collapsed or were damaged and require extensive repairs, while businesses were affected resulting in livelihoods interrupted, all of which combined has left many families struggling to recover.
Over the past 2 months, Tzu Chi has been conducting an extensive and detailed disaster assessment in the hardest-hit areas. The assessment was conducted in collaboration with local volunteers who know their communities well, and who were trained by Tzu Chi volunteers in how to determine damage and collect data. By going from house to house in the areas impacted, this team effort resulted in the creation of lists of households in need of aid in several municipalities and cities. Tzu Chi will now provide disaster relief to those households.
Nowadays, we live in a global village and we are one family. Earthquakes occur in Taiwan often, and we endured great hardship after the big one in September 1999. When we heard about the massive earthquake here in Mexico, we rushed to bring our love and care to let you know that you’re not alone, and we know how you feel.
Stephen Huang, Executive Director of Global Tzu Chi Volunteers
