On Christmas Eve in 2021, Tzu Chi USA’s Midwest Region volunteers conducted a relief distribution in Bowling Green, Kentucky, a city that had been hit hard when multiple tornadoes raged across the U.S. Midwest on December 10–11. On February 11, 2022, Tzu Chi volunteers revisited Bowling Green to provide further love and care for families.

On December 10–11 of 2021, multiple states in the U.S. Midwest were impacted by dozens of tornadoes. Tzu Chi Midwest volunteers mobilized swiftly for emergency distributions, hoping to provide direct warmth and relief for survivors before Christmas. Two months after the disaster, Tzu Chi volunteers have continued to be committed to community residents in these disaster-impacted areas. In February, volunteers returned to Kentucky to further understand the needs of survivors. Tzu Chi volunteers were scheduled to visit Dawson Springs chiefly to investigate the disaster’s impact, and have a face-to-face meeting with Dawson Springs city officials as well as representatives of the American Red Cross to discuss preliminary relief. It was determined that on February 26–27, the local high school would be used to prepare for the distribution of cash cards and materials for 620 affected households in Dawson Springs.

Tzu Chi volunteers partnered with local organizations to assist those who had been impacted by the summer wildfires in Northern California. Nearly five months after the natural disaster, residents are still struggling to put their lives back together. Volunteers offered cash cards and eco-blankets to attendants who came to the distribution events.

Residents of Northern California were hit with blow after blow as they endured natural disasters during a global pandemic. Tzu Chi volunteers connected with individuals at various events and listened to their stories of survival. Each case was different, and every situation required a new approach, but volunteers were determined to help each person they had spoken to. From Hispanic immigrants living in harsh winter conditions to a community wiped out by the wildfires, Tzu Chi met with those who were suffering and sought to console them some way, somehow.

Nancy Tituaña first met the Tzu Chi team when her own organization, Brigada de Esperanza NY, volunteered alongside the Foundation to help families who were affected by COVID-19. During a distribution event, Nancy was hit by a drunk-driver and lost one of her legs in the accident. The Tzu Chi International Medical Association has taken on the case and helped Nancy’s recovery with physical therapy and acupuncture.

Tzu Chi volunteers ran into Lynette Otto as she worked at her local church helping others in her community. As they began to talk to her, it became clear that Lynette was in need of help herself. After losing everything in California’s Camp Fire of 2018, Lynette was living out of her car and caring for her young granddaughter. Tzu Chi’s team provided Lynette with a new RV and larger car to alleviate her burden.

As the number of COVID-19 infections slowed in the U.S., Tzu Chi volunteers resumed the Mobile Vision Clinic in school districts in El Monte, CA, where they prescribed new eyeglasses for students from disadvantaged families. The kids couldn’t wait to put on their new glasses, and laughed heartily behind their masks, now that they could see the world clearly again.

On August 29, 2021, Hurricane Ida ransacked the entire East Coast and parts of the South, severely impacting Louisiana. Flood warnings and road closures threatened to halt humanitarian aid organizations from delivering relief to survivors and evacuees; Tzu Chi’s Southern Regional Office partnered with area nonprofits to brainstorm the most effective ways to help those in need. The Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation was especially touched to have been able to connect with international students from Taiwan who study at New Orleans’ Tulane University.
