As summer came to an end and we welcomed a brand new season, a song of joy could be heard echoing at the Tzu Chi Mid-Atlantic Region Food Pantry. On September 9, 2022, volunteers and recipients celebrated the 12th anniversary of the food pantry.

On August 20, 2022, a fire sparked at the River Place Apartment Community in Brown Deer, Wisconsin, believed to have been started by a lightning strike. Apartment residents thankfully had time to evacuate, but 44 families, including 75 children who were about to start school, had been temporarily displaced by the disaster. Mobilizing swiftly, Tzu Chi volunteers visited the community to distribute direct relief in the form of cash cards and more with help from the American Red Cross (ARC).

On the morning of June 11, 2022, Tzu Chi Long Island’s biweekly food pantry welcomed local community members who arrived to pick up fresh fruits and vegetables. On that day, another special event awaited them as well. Tzu Chi USA’s Long Island Service Center had held its first 21-Day Vegetarian Challenge, and on the final day, participants gathered to celebrate their efforts.

The Tzu Chi USA National Headquarters Region Orange County Service Center has regularly distributed fruits and vegetables to low-income families in Santa Ana. Beginning in June, the Orange County Food Bank additionally provided baby diapers. On August 11, 2022, Tzu Chi distributed nine pallets of fresh vegetables and fruits, three pallets of diapers, and two pallets of other items, a total of 14 pallets of supplies, to nearly 100 parents at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School.

August is the back-to-school month in the United States. Each year at this time, Tzu Chi USA prepares school supplies for distribution to underprivileged students. In 2022, the Tzu Chi USA Greater Washington DC Region planned the back-to-school distribution in partnership with Truist Financial. The bank would provide backpacks while Tzu Chi would purchase the school supplies. On the day of the distribution, August 7, a total of 335 low-income families from Maryland and Virginia received backpacks with school supplies in affiliation with the Linkages to Learning Program of Montgomery County Public Schools, Maryland’s largest school district.

As residents came in to eat Tzu Chi’s vegetarian meals, it was evident that they had grown to become comfortable with the team. Since the pandemic first began, volunteers from Tzu Chi Raleigh Service Center have been working with the Durham Rescue Mission to put on dinner services.
