Three weeks after the devastating February 6 earthquake in Turkey, Tzu Chi has been working non-stop to bring care and supplies to survivors. Also deeply affected by this tragedy was Turkey’s neighbor, Syria, which experienced the deadliest quake since the 1822 Aleppo earthquake. Striving to deliver timely relief to disaster survivors in Syria, Tzu Chi volunteers navigated challenges with determined hearts, and now, progress has been achieved.

On February 24, 2022, the Russian army invaded Ukraine. This largest war since the start of the 21st century directly displaced more than eight million Ukrainian families and affected countries and regions worldwide in terms of economy, food and agriculture, energy, and regional security. Representatives of two international organizations that signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Tzu Chi last year for a joint humanitarian aid effort for Ukrainians, IsraAid, and ADRA International (The Adventist Development and Relief Agency International), met Debra Boudreaux, CEO of Tzu Chi USA, for the first time on February 24, 2023. The date marked the first anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war. They exchanged their mutual international emergency aid experience and discussed current disaster relief following the recent earthquake in Turkey.

On February 17-19, 2023, Tzu Chi Turkey provided vital aid to earthquake survivors at Istanbul's El Menahil International School while also sending the Tzu Chi Earthquake Relief Team to the worst-hit region, the Hatay Province in southern Turkey. The team plans to work alongside Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) to assess survivors' needs and develop a plan for further cooperation.

On February 6, 2023, a major 7.8 magnitude earthquake brought heavy damage to Antakya, the capital of Hatay Province, Turkey. The sudden disaster collapsed beloved homes, buildings, and cherished historical sites. Then, on the evening of February 20, a 6.4 magnitude quake struck Hatay, causing yet more destruction to the province, and adding to this already tragic moment. Tzu Chi aims to hold distributions for more than 33,000 households in the hardest-hit areas of Hatay, Gaziantep, and Kilis.

On February 17, 2023, Tzu Chi volunteers hosted a distribution at El Menahil International School in Istanbul, Turkey. The 152 care recipients included people who’d been displaced as result of recent deadly earthquakes in Turkey. Simultaneously, a team of Tzu Chi Relief volunteers visited the city of Nurdağı, in the Gaziantep Province to assess on-the-ground conditions.
