In recent years, the United States has experienced severe inflation, a steadily rising unemployment rate, and reduced social services, increasing the number of households facing food insecurity. In light of this situation, the Tzu Chi New Jersey Food Pantry program has expanded its services and officially launched a digital scanning system to offset the challenges posed by inclement weather and the shortage of volunteer staffing.
Early in the morning, the street just outside Gabrielino High School in San Gabriel, California, was lined with vehicles, as no one wanted to miss the Tzu Chi grocery distribution event taking place that day. Inflation has increased daily household expenses across the nation, making Tzu Chi USA’s regular community grocery distributions crucial for many at present.
Before seven in the morning on Saturday, June 11, 2022, a truck loaded with food from Second Harvest Food Bank in Northern California’s Silicon Valley slowly approached Costano Elementary School in East Palo Alto, where Tzu Chi volunteers provide semimonthly food distributions. After the driver unloaded the truck, Tzu Chi volunteers skillfully sorted the different kinds of food in preparation for distribution. Meanwhile, local community residents queued up to register, bringing shopping bags or carts to pick up food that would last them for the next few weeks.
