The Happy Campus program began in 2006 in the neighborhood of Bayview-Hunters Point, San Francisco, California. Tzu Chi USA volunteers discovered great need in the schools where families are struggling to meet basic needs in their daily lives, and students are lacking scholastic skills to keep up with school work. Tzu Chi volunteers partner with school district to focus on attendance incentive program, scholastic skill tutoring and academic supplies to students as well as providing life necessities to the families including furnishing homes for the needy. Our Happy Campus program is now active in 33 schools across 10 states including Ravenswood City School District and the San Francisco Unified School Districts.
Tzu Chi USA’s Happy Campus program offers after-school supplemental tutoring, life skills education, backpacks with food for the weekend, school supplies, and more to students at underserved and low-performing elementary schools. To date, students at 33 schools across 10 states have benefitted.
Our goal is to establish student-centered learning environments across the country. We partner with schools and communities to equip students with the scholastic and life skills they need, provide items helpful at school and at home, and improve family relationships and support for the youngest members of our society.
Our vision is for all children, particularly those who may struggle academically, socially, or economically, to reach their greatest potential to be a force for good in their communities, wherever those may be.
Our values encompass respect, love, and compassion for one another. They also include a strong belief in integrity, the spirit of cooperation, diversity, and inclusivity.
Among our biggest focuses is the concept of gratitude, for our caregivers, for teachers, for all those who help us stay fed, for the wonders of our planet, for our guardians and mentors, and to all who guide children on their way to an impactful life beyond school.
PROGRAMS
While students primarily receive supplemental academic services, in addition to cultural and life skills, we strive to offer children in both Ravenwood City and the San Francisco Unified School Districts much more based on their individual needs with a loving-care that is the signature of our volunteers. We additionally offer weekly, monthly, and semester-long attendance incentive programs for students and families. These incentive programs reward students with prizes from incentive stores, as well as monthly smoothie parties, and family dinner events.

Educators, administrators, and staff are excellent partners in bettering our children. They are the most familiar with the troubles and vulnerabilities of their students and are a valuable resource in improving students’ lives. Working together helps us all. Our school support program also includes tutoring, lessons in life skills, teacher’s appreciation, and more.
Our help extends to the needs of everyone in our local communities, through medical outreaches that provide necessary medical services to low-income parents and their children, and providing parents of students with needs as basic as food, furniture, and job search support. Families are also encouraged to aid the environment through our partnership with the Department of Conservation, which offers 3R Education (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), and upholds the community’s zero waste policy. Tzu Chi Medical’s Mobile Dental Clinic also brings crucial free dental services right to those who are most in need through our Happy Campus program.
