After a long hiatus caused by the pandemic, Belle Haven Elementary School’s Excellence Attendance Award Ceremony finds rejuvenation due to efforts by Tzu Chi Northwest volunteers to bring the commemoration back to East Palo Alto.
On December 7, 2022, at the invitation of Shelyn Elementary School of Rowland Unified School District, the Tzu Chi Education team brought a fun-filled environmental education class to the school.
Tzu Chi Elementary School in Walnut, California, organized a clothes recycling drive from October 10 to 21, 2022. Everyone, from teachers, parents, and students, did their best to cooperate, with 109 people participating. In the spirit of “cherishing things and blessings,” families donated their unwanted clothes and shoes to give them a second life when people in need in the community received them. The drive seamlessly combined charity with environmental protection through recycling second-hand yet still valuable goods. A total of 250 bags of donated clothing were collected and delivered to a charity distribution site.
On December 11, 2021, thirty Tzu Chi volunteers from California’s Silicon Valley joined hands at Costaño Elementary School in East Palo Alto for a Christmas gift-giving distribution event that served 50 families.
Tzu Chi Youth Association members from Sacramento, California, organized a three-month English language learning program online with students of Shuanghu Elementary School in Taiwan.
On a sunny Saturday morning in April of 2021, families from Rosa L. Parks Elementary School returned to their beloved campus to pick up groceries prepared by Tzu Chi USA’s Greater Washington DC Region volunteers.
The office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis graciously collaborated with Tzu Chi USA, the American Red Cross, and Northgate Market, to distribute 630 sets of food and essential supplies at Walnut Park Elementary School on February 12th, 2021.
On December 23rd, when Tzu Chi volunteers from Washington DC donated care packages full of groceries to students from low-income families in JoAnn Leleck Elementary School, a parent suddenly handed a card to Tzu Chi volunteers to express their gratitude.
Due to the continuing pandemic across the nation, and indeed the globe, most schools have continued to utilize remote learning as the main means of interaction among students and teachers. In some locations, however, students return to school once per month to receive study guides and learning kits required for online courses. For Belle Haven Elementary School, specifically, the back-to-school day fell on Wednesday, December 9th, 2020, and lasted for three consecutive days. What was unique about this month’s back-to-school days, however, was that aside from learning kits, students would also pick up Christmas presents as well.
