Emergency Financial Aid After Detroit Floods from Tzu Chi USA

Midwest  |  May 21, 2019

May 21, 2019 – After severe floods in Detroit, Michigan, on April 30, 2019, the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation (also known as Tzu Chi USA), a volunteer humanitarian organization, will provide property owners and renters with emergency financial aid for completely destroyed or majorly damaged properties.

A near-record of up to 6 inches of rain flooded Detroit communities and took one resident’s life. The heavy downpours flooded homes, roads and caused numerous power outages. Families unable to escape the rising waters in their homes were evacuated by boat. The thousands of gallons of rainwater damaged an estimated 3,000 homes in Wayne County resulting in a declared state of emergency. Flood cleanup and recovery are anticipated to be a slow and tedious process, particularly in consideration of long-term issues like mold.

An invite-only cash card distribution for impacted Detroit property owners and renters will be held at the Richard A. Young Recreation Center in Dearborn Heights, Michigan on Saturday, May 25 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The distribution will provide the necessary financial aid needed to ensure survivor recovery from the floods. Upon arrival attendees must present the required documentation including a valid photo ID and a copy of a property utility bill under their name for the duration of the service period. A brief information session will be held prior to aid dispersion.

WHEN: Saturday, May 25, 2019
TIME: 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
WHERE: Richard A Young Recreation Center
5400 McKinley St
Dearborn Heights, MI 48125

IMPORTANT NOTE: At the door, registrants must present (1) photo ID, (2) mailed invitation letter, and (3) a copy of a utility bill showing their name for the service period (including the date of April 30, 2019).

We’ll also host a brief information session to share Tzu Chi’s mission and commitment to emergency relief, and then distribute cash cards to residents respectfully. Please be informed that all qualifying residents seeking aid must be present themselves, with the required documentation listed above to receive our cash cards.
