Who We Are

All Tzu Chi Academies in the US have been accredited by WASC in 2024. Portland Academy is one of them. We offer instruction in traditional Chinese language, culture and humanities. Classes are from Zhuyin up to the tenth grade. Enrollment is open to students aged 5-18.

The predecessor of our school went through the Children’s Enrichment Class in 2009 and then was established as Portland Tzu Chi Humanities Class in 2010. After six years of effort, Tzu Chi Academy, Portland was formally approved in 2016, becoming the 25th Tzu Chi Academy in the United States.

Tzu Chi Academy Portland is a non-profit educational and cultural institution that adheres to Tzu Chi’s spiritual concept. The school’s motto, “Kindness, compassion, joy, and unselfish giving,” inspires awareness, responsibility, helpfulness, community-mindedness, and care for the Earth.

Tzu Chi Education is a “people-oriented” education that not only teaches Chinese language and arts but also emphasizes the cultivation of life education and humanistic spirit. Through inspirational games and experiential activities, we enhance students’ abilities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Chinese. We promote mindful Jing Si Aphorism teaching and character education, helping students cultivate good character and attitudes in their daily life.

The teaching content is rich, including not only instruction in Chinese listening, speaking, reading, writing, and typing, but also humanities and arts classes, as well as “character education” by Jing Si Aphorisms teaching.

  • Language classes utilize the “Let’s Learn Chinese” and “MeiZhou Chinese” as the textbooks.
  • Tzu Chi’s humanities program is based on the “Great Love Navigator” course plan, with the workbook of Jing Si Aphorisms as additional teaching material.
  • Cultural classes incorporate Tzu Chi songs, sign language, tea ceremonies, flower arrangement activities, the art of paper cutting, environmental protection, painting, yoga, drama, and traditional festival handicrafts etc.
