Tzu Chi established the first Tzu Chi Academy in Los Angeles, California, in 1994. Today, 28 years later, there are 25 Tzu Chi Academies in the United States. The motto of the Academies is “Kindness, compassion, joy, and unselfish giving,” which inspires children’s inherent conscience, abilities, and goodness. Through the study of the humanities and arts, children cultivate gratitude, respect, and love.
Tzu Chi Academy’s curriculum is diversified. It not only teaches Chinese and talent courses but also incorporates lively Jing Si language teaching and Tzu Chi humanities courses to provide children with a full range of humanistic education.
The curriculum encompasses cultural classes, including current affairs, doing good deeds, filial piety, environmental protection, mutual help, and other current world issues, so that children can use Chinese in their lives while studying the language.
Adhering to Tzu Chi’s philosophy and consistent, high-quality education, the Academies teach Chinese language listening, speaking, reading, and writing while integrating Jing Si language and humanities subjects, allowing students to use Chinese while studying. The inherent Chinese culture can also inspire students’ conscience and abilities, leading them toward becoming a pillar of society in the future.
As one of Tzu Chi’s four core missions, education upholds a love-based and holistic philosophy. Tzu Chi’s education combines multiculturalism with cultivating life ethics, moral concepts, and humanities that nurture respect, love, care for one another and giving back to the community. Through humanistic education, students develop character, dignity, thoughtfulness, open-mindedness, and positive life goals.
We welcome families from China, Southeast Asia, Taiwan, the United States, and all over the world who want to learn Chinese and humanities. In addition to the original phonetics class, the Academy offers a pinyin class, allowing children to choose their tools to learn Chinese.
In addition to teaching Chinese language skills, such as speaking, reading, writing, and typing, our humanities classes, cultural classes, and Jing Si Aphorism lessons promote character development.
The Academy’s motto, “Kindness, compassion, joy, and unselfish giving,” inspires awareness, responsibility, helpfulness, community-mindedness, and care for the Earth.
The Chinese language class is mainly based on the textbooks of “Chinese Go Forward” and “New Version of Chinese,” as well as Jing Si language teaching “Great Love Pilot” and other supplementary textbooks.
The Jing Si language and humanities class is adapted from the overseas version of Taiwan’s “Great Love Pilot” by the Tzu Chi Federation of America’s teaching and development room and the Jing Si language workbook teaching materials.
Humanities and talent classes include Tzu Chi songs, sign language, crafts, paper cutting, painting, Chinese chess, kung fu, basketball, badminton, etc.
Students ages four to eighteen are welcome to apply.
