Who We Are

Tzu Chi Academy in Washington, D.C. was officially established in Maryland in the greater Washington, D.C. area in 2001. Its predecessor was the Tzu Chi Humanities Class, which began operating in 1999. The goal of Tzu Chi’s educational mission is to awaken students’ conscience, potential, and compassion through precept, example, and environment. In addition to cultivating professional intelligence, the academy places a strong emphasis on nurturing the Tzu Chi humanistic spirit of respect, gratitude, and love through “Life Education,” “Living Education,” and “Great Love and Care.”

Dedicated to preserving Chinese culture and promoting Tzu Chi humanistic education, Tzu Chi Academy places a strong emphasis on the holistic development of knowledge and character. Through education, we strive to connect with the hearts of our students, nurturing them into grateful, respectful, and compassionate individuals.

Guided by the Tzu Chi spirit of “love, compassion, joy, and sacrifice” and “truthfulness, righteousness, faith, and practicality,” we educate young children and adolescents about Chinese culture, cultivating their character, awakening their conscience, and empowering them to fulfill their potential.

We aim for students to learn life principles alongside their Chinese studies, becoming grateful, respectful, and compassionate individuals. Through the teaching of Jing Si aphorisms, we hope that each child will realize the joy of doing good. We hope that teachers, parents, and volunteers will love children with the heart of a mother and educate them with the wisdom of a Bodhisattva. May everyone bring this love and goodness back to their families, for it is from happy families that we can build a harmonious society.
