Providing Aid After an Apartment Building Fire in Oakland, California

On September 2, 2024, Tzu Chi USA Northwest Region’s Oakland Service Center volunteers held a second disaster relief distribution at the Asian Cultural Center in Oakland for those impacted by a recent fire in a low-rent apartment building in Chinatown. Nearly 100 affected residents came to the event, where Tzu Chi not only provided cash cards to address their daily needs but also extended mid-term care, helping them find suitable transitional housing while collaborating with community organizations to speed up repairs in their former dwellings, thereby soothing the disaster survivors’ persistent fears and anxiety.

Arizona’s TSMC Village Gives Thanks and Gives Back

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) – Taiwan’s largest company and the world’s second-most valuable semiconductor company – announced the construction of a 5-nanometer advanced semiconductor fab in Arizona in 2020. As TSMC moved into the area and sent hundreds of engineers to the U.S., the families of those who came to the U.S. formed a new Chinese community called TSMC Village. However, frightening and unprecedented challenges soon emerged. Today, these families continue to give back.

Tzu Chi’s Long-Term Care Can Be Transformative

In early March 2023, continuous heavy rains in Northern California’s Bay Area led to severe flooding. Lorraine’s home in Boulder Creek, a small rural community in the coastal Santa Cruz Mountains, was damaged by a mudslide, which also severely impacted the surrounding environment. Tzu Chi USA Northwest Region’s volunteer team from Silicon Valley not only provided emergency assistance in the form of cash cards but also immediately formed a care team after learning that Lorraine, who lives alone and has medical issues and limited mobility, would have difficulty cleaning up after the disaster on her own. The team now regularly visits Lorraine in her mountain home to assist in the ongoing and demanding cleanup effort.

The Oakland Community Shows Its Support for Tzu Chi’s Vision Care Plans

Tzu Chi USA Northwest Region’s Oakland Service Center team held an iCare510 Charity Appreciation Dinner on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at the Golden Peony Tea House in Oakland. The purpose of the dinner was to thank the Oakland community for supporting Tzu Chi’s free vision clinic services for disadvantaged children and to raise funds for the purchase of vision testing equipment. The team launched the fundraising campaign in early June, and it received an overwhelming response. The campaign reached its funding goal by the end of the month while love from people from all walks of life continued to pour in. More than 300 people came to the Appreciation Dinner to cheer the Tzu Chi Oakland volunteer team on for their long-term dedication and hard work to benefit the community.
