En la ma\u00f1ana del 30 de julio de 2022, varios voluntarios ten\u00edan una cita un poco fuera de lo com\u00fan. Hab\u00edan sido invitados a visitar la casa de un miembro especial de la comunidad de Tzu Chi, George Hardwick. George invit\u00f3 a los voluntarios a revisar su banco de alimentos personal, que regularmente abastece con comida para luego donarla al Centro de Servicio de Tzu Chi en Phoenix.<\/p>

Los voluntarios que llegaron se encontraron con filas de bolsas ordenadas listas para ser donadas. George les explic\u00f3 que no solo donaba a Tzu Chi, sino que tambi\u00e9n pasaba dejando donaciones a otras organizaciones y lo hac\u00eda \u00e9l mismo.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

George, que vive solo, es un trabajador social proveniente del Servicio de Familia y Ni\u00f1os Jud\u00edos en Phoenix. Obtiene un ingreso modesto, vive holgadamente y le gusta llevar una vida simple. No cuenta con un tel\u00e9fono inteligente o internet, pero se mantiene entretenido siendo un voluntario.<\/p>

George llev\u00f3 a los voluntarios a una habitaci\u00f3n a la que \u00e9l llama, \u201cEl banco de alimentos\u201d; ah\u00ed se encontraba una gran variedad de productos enlatados, cereales, arroz, fideos, mantequilla de man\u00ed, bebidas, cepillos de dientes, pasta dental, jab\u00f3n y otros productos. George colg\u00f3 la mochila con el logotipo de Tzu Chi en su pared como una decoraci\u00f3n significativa para el espacio.<\/p>

\u00c9l le mencion\u00f3 a los voluntarios que siempre compra comida seca en grandes cantidades cuando hay ofertas. Con la misma filosof\u00eda de las alcanc\u00edas de bamb\u00fa, \u00e9l va agregando poco a poco, creando una cantidad considerable de comida al tiempo y eventualmente lo dona a varias caridades. Sin cansarse, \u00e9l reabastece su colecci\u00f3n, diversificandola y haci\u00e9ndola lo m\u00e1s grande posible.<\/p>

Cuando el Centro de Servicios de Phoenix recibe las donaciones de George, \u00e9stas llegan a un espacio especial designado \u201cLa habitaci\u00f3n de George\u201d. Cuando se preparan las cajas de alimentos para las distribuciones, los voluntarios utilizan los alimentos de George por si hay escasez en el banco de alimentos general.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Ver a George llegar en su camioneta repleta de comida es una visi\u00f3n impresionante y conmovedora. A muchos voluntarios les recuerda a los carritos de buey en el \u00e1rea rural de Taiw\u00e1n. George nunca quiere ser nombrado u recibir un recibo ya que est\u00e1 contento de dar sin pedir nada a cambio.<\/p>

Luego de visitar el banco de alimentos de George, los voluntarios no pudieron aguantarse por preguntarle cu\u00e1nta comida hab\u00eda donado durante la pandemia. \u00c9l respondi\u00f3 que su donaci\u00f3n andaba en un total de 4 700 USD. Pero como siempre se fija en los descuentos, sin el descuento ser\u00eda como 7 000 USD.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Los voluntarios vieron una alcanc\u00eda de bamb\u00fa llena de dinero en la esquina de la habitaci\u00f3n. A primera vista, parec\u00eda estar llena de billetes de un d\u00f3lar, pero al verla m\u00e1s de cerca se pod\u00edan ver muchos rollos. Despu\u00e9s de contar la \u00faltima donaci\u00f3n de George, el total lleg\u00f3 a m\u00e1s de $800. Su generosidad no conoce l\u00edmites, y es realmente notable c\u00f3mo la bondad de un hombre puede llegar tan lejos.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

George, siendo un budista devoto, invit\u00f3 a los voluntarios a una sala donde suele meditar y orar. En el techo hay un mapa estelar c\u00f3smico dibujado por la hija de George. Hay innumerables estatuas de Buda y libros en todo el espacio, entre los que se encuentra una fila completa de literatura de la Maestra Cheng Yen. George exhibi\u00f3 de manera destacada los libros que compr\u00f3 en el Centro de Servicio Tzu Chi en Las Vegas y \u201cEl Sutra de los Significados Infinitos\u201d obsequiado por Ren Liu, el gerente del Centro de Servicio Tzu Chi Phoenix.<\/p>

George comenta que ha estudiado cada libro y que ha disfrutado viajar a los pa\u00edses budistas en el sureste de Asia para obtener m\u00e1s sabidur\u00eda. Durante sus viajes, \u00e9l se dedic\u00f3 a comprar estatuillas de Buda o Bodhisattva para agregarlas a su habitaci\u00f3n.\u00a0<\/p>

El buen karma entre George y Tzu Chi se remonta a hace ocho a\u00f1os, antes de que supiera sobre el Centro de servicio de Tzu Chi en Phoenix. George dijo: \u201cHab\u00eda estado buscando una organizaci\u00f3n ben\u00e9fica que coincidiera con mis expectativas. El festival de la Semana China de Phoenix hace a\u00f1os se llev\u00f3 a cabo en el Centro Cultural Chino de Phoenix. Ah\u00ed encontr\u00e9 un puesto de Tzu Chi en la plaza y me detuve para comprar algunos libros y me encari\u00f1e\u201d.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Desde que conoci\u00f3 a Tzu Chi, George encontr\u00f3 una profunda conexi\u00f3n con la misi\u00f3n de la organizaci\u00f3n; no solo recogi\u00f3 alcanc\u00edas de bamb\u00fa, sino que tambi\u00e9n particip\u00f3 en ceremonias de Ba\u00f1o de Buda y cenas de recaudaci\u00f3n de fondos. La hija de George, que es muy art\u00edstica y tambi\u00e9n se uni\u00f3 a la dedicaci\u00f3n de su padre. Us\u00f3 pinturas al \u00f3leo para conmemorar el logotipo de Tzu Chi y lo envi\u00f3 al Centro de servicio de Phoenix para exhibirlo.<\/p>

Un d\u00eda, cuando George sal\u00eda del Centro de Servicio de Tzu Chi en Phoenix, de repente se dio cuenta de que la organizaci\u00f3n ben\u00e9fica tambi\u00e9n era un banco de alimentos. George record\u00f3: \u201cTan pronto como lo pens\u00e9, decid\u00ed comenzar a donar alimentos. Estoy muy feliz de ver las sonrisas de estas familias que vienen a recibir los alimentos que necesitan, y a\u00fan m\u00e1s feliz de escuchar que se han beneficiado de los art\u00edculos que he donado\u201d.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
