Tzu Chi Volunteers Accompany Hurricane Ian Survivors on the Road Ahead

Upon witnessing the effects of Hurricane Ian in Florida, Tzu Chi volunteers from the Southern Regional office and additional United States regional offices swiftly gathered in Florida to provide their love and relief. Together, they assessed the situation on site and began a six-day, seven-session distribution effort as of October 15, 2022. The latest and largest event was held on November 5 in Lee County’s Fort Myers community. With both hands outstretched and heads bowed in reverence, Tzu Chi volunteers delivered cash cards, eco-blankets, and essential supplies to survivors.

Hurricane Ian Relief Reveals Tzu Chi’s Seeds of Care in Florida Blossoming

Tzu Chi USA first brought disaster relief to Collier County, Florida, after Hurricane Irma in 2017. Then, in September 2022, Hurricane Ian struck southwestern Florida again, and Tzu Chi volunteers returned to the area to provide aid. With the bonds formed here five years ago and the help of Collier County Commissioner Penny Taylor, the Tzu Chi team could quickly complete a disaster assessment and other preparations for several Hurricane Ian relief distributions. Tzu Chi USA held its fourth distribution at the Naples Botanical Garden on October 23.

Tzu Chi’s Hurricane Ian Relief Returns to Pine Island

On October 8, 2022, Pine Island was opened for the first time since Hurricane Ian overwhelmed parts of Florida’s western coast. At the time, a Tzu Chi disaster assessment team entered the island to assess needs, and volunteers discovered that many community residents lost their means of transportation due to the storm’s damage. Hoping to provide effective care and relief, Tzu Chi volunteers visited Pine Island Community Church on October 29, holding two hurricane relief distributions for survivors.

Tzu Chi’s Hurricane Ian Relief Begins in Arcadia and Fort Myers

Tzu Chi’s first Hurricane Ian relief distribution in Florida was held on the morning of October 15, 2022, at the Arcadia RCMA Child Development Center. In the afternoon on the very same day, a second relief distribution took place at the Boys & Girls Club of Lee County, located ten minutes away from the Lee County Disaster Recovery Center (DRC). A total of 235 families received cash cards valued at $800–$1,200 depending on household size, as well as 235 DA.AI Technology eco-friendly blankets, benefiting 806 hurricane survivors.
